A guide to Edinburgh Post Codes
Edinburgh City Centre is broadly covered by three post code areas EH1, EH2 and EH3. EH1 is as you might expect simply the most 'central' to the main tourist areas and the Old & NewTown included.
EH1 post codes are those closest to the main post office building in the City Centre at Princes Street, EH1 post codes therefore cover the City Centre,
EH2 post codes cover a fairly small area to the North of Princes Street in the New Town, and is not especially handy for Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile or the rest of the Old Town.
EH3 post codes are split into two seperate sections. The first covers the remainder of the New Town, not included within EH2 and extends past the Royal Botanic Gardens and the Inverleith area to a section of Ferry Road which would not really be considered city centre by anyone. The other section covers Edinburgh's West End, from the Water of Leith southwards including Shandwick Place and Haymarket, South along Lothian Road and adjoining streets to Tollcross, Lauriston and the South-West corner of the Old Town.
Higher Post Codes extend out into the suburbs quite rapidly EH4 for example extends from just beyond the West End of Edinburgh City Centre, areas such as Murrayfield, all the way out to Cramond, the North West corner of the City. EH5 is a fairly small area centered upon the waterfront area of Granton.
EH6 is Leith's post code, once a town in its own right with the port that served Edinburgh. EH7 is a wide strip running East-West from Seafield to Ferry Road and includes London Road to its South side and includes streets around the middle section of Leith Walk. EH8 post codes form a horseshoe around Holyrood Park and Arthur's Seat, from Duddingston Willowbrae and Northfield in the East, past Meadowbank in the North and through the Scottish Parliament, Holyrood Palace and Dynamic Earth areas to St Leonard's and parts of Newington in the West.
EH9 lies to the South of the City Centre, stretching southwards through the areas of Marchmont, the Grange and covering the many guest houses on the main roads into Edinburgh from the South, some 15 minutes or so by bus from the City Centre. EH10 is a huge area outside the City Centre running from Bruntsfield through Morningside and areas such as Buckstone and Faremilehead all the way out to the City Bypass, 15 minutes drive from the city centre, up to 30 minutes by bus. Higher EH postcodes cover the remainder of outer Edinburgh and extend to cover most of the Lothians, including towns such as Livingston, Bathgate and South Queensferry, at the Forth Bridges.

How do people say/spell Edinburgh?
Edinburgh is often mis-spelled and even more often mispronounced: It is correctly spoken as ''Edin-bur-uh', with three syllables though with some local (and quicker) accents it can sound more like 'Edin-bruh'. The 'G' is definitely silent, and it is not 'Edin-burrow' or 'Edin-bro'. Other countries sometimes translate the city's name such as Edimburgo in Italy or Edimbourg in France.
Our website tracking reveals an array of mis-spellings, so if you didn't get it right first time, its really not unusual! People have found their way to this page using the following variations in order of popularity with other countries names for Edinburgh included; edimburgo, edinburg, edimbourg, edingburgh, edimburgh, edimburg, edinburgo , edinbrugh , edinbourgh, edinburugh, edinborough , edinbrough, edinbugh, endinburgh, endingburgh, and then a handful of typing errors rather than wrong spellings such as edinbough, edniburgh and edingurgh.
